Get Lost (in the maze)

Tuesday 1 June 2010

I have just come back from Banff, Scotland (my home town) where I made a maze from thousands of strands of yarn which was part of the Coast Festival in Banff castle grounds. It was quite a challenge, so I wanted to show you 'the making of' but in the end we created a 10 meter by 10 meter labyrinth!

I couldn't have done it without all the help from local volunteers- including 6 firemen who put all the posts in, Matt, Leanne, Lynne, Paloma, Omar, Alice, Maureen, Maddie, Kate, and the 3 ladies from Aberdeenshire Council, who worked through the torrential rain while we were making it. I love the Scottish weather!
a long way to go!

We got there, after 11 hours of wrapping, cutting, twisting and raining!
The best part was seeing people running around using it, and getting a bit lost in it... made it all worth while.

  8. Beautiful & so much fun! Well done! It's a wet, wintery school holiday over here in NZ & I think I might have to let my children go wild with some wool around a few chairs! Thanks for the idea! Visiting from Crafty Crow :)

  10. this is incredible. as a child my mother would tie party favors to yarn and twine it all over our house and throughout the yard, everyone's yarn intermingling. really loved that.

  11. thanks for all your lovely comments about the maze. I look at the images now, and can't believe we did it! sadly it was only up for 3 days, would have been lovely to see what would happen to it over time.

  12. Completely awesome!!!!! A shame it couldn't have been up all summer... A lot of work, it must have been very satisfying to see the end result and people enjoying it. Perhaps a mini version as a piece of 3d wall art??

  15. that is a shame that it was only up 3 days especially because it took so long. its popular here to do corn mazes in Utah at Halloween but I've gotten lost in them and had creepy people follow me in them and they freak me out as you can't really see over the corn. yours is such a better idea. I linked to it on my blog - http://parentplanet.wordpress.com/2010/07/29/great-sites-of-the-week-7-29/

  17. This is absolutely awesome! I'd love to make one for my yard. I'm sure the grandkids would adore it and it would perfectly match my house which is all the rainbow colors--inside, not out! Thanks for showing us.

  18. DoDear Donna,

I felt in love with your maze few months ago. In the meantime I´ve become a member of a new community around nursery school my dauther is attending and we have decided to use your idea for a community project and build similar maze ( a bit smaller version) in our school garden. We are just about to start collecting yarn all around our town. If you have any tips and tricks for building we would love to hear them. Alice from Czech Republic.
